I’ve been showing teaser images of this project for a while now on Twitter, but I’m very pleased to announce that I’m now offering a range of carefully selected and lovingly restored vintage transit and railroad maps in my shop as an historical complement to my own modern transit map designs. Check back often, as I plan on adding more maps in the near future!

The maps have all been sourced from high resolution archives, including the Library of Congress, and are believed to be in the public domain. Restoration work that I have performed includes colour correction, discolouration and stain removal, deletion of tears and wrinkles, and in some instances, the seamless joining of two separate halves of a map. At the same time, I’ve attempted to preserve the “vintage” character of each map, as that’s a big part of what makes them so interesting and visually appealing. I like to call this approach “sympathetic restoration”.

Examples of the maps currently for sale are in the gallery below.

Streetcars of Washington, DC, 1880 Terminals of the Chicago & North-Western Railroad, 1902 Columbia River Gorge, 1905 Elevated Railroads of Chicago, 1908 Electric Railroad Time Zones, Melbourne, Australia, 1902 Rapid Transit of Greater New York, 1939
